When to replace a pool filter cartridge

Leaves and bugs caught in a pool skimmer basket

Most pool cartridges last 1-3 swimming seasons; spa cartridges about 12-24 months. Replace sooner if any of the signs below appear.

Seven signs it’s time

  1. Torn or frayed fabric: dirt goes straight through.
  2. Flattened or matted pleats that don’t spring back after cleaning.
  3. Cracked or separated end caps, or a crushed inner core.
  4. Short cycles: pressure climbs back up within days of cleaning.
  5. Cloudy water despite balanced chemistry and normal run times.
  6. Permanent discoloration or slime that soaking won’t remove.
  7. Age: more than about 3 seasons (pool) or 2 years (spa).

Make cartridges last longer

  • Clean on pressure, not a calendar.
  • Rotate two sets so each one dries fully.
  • Degrease regularly: oils clog fabric faster than dirt.
  • Keep water balanced; scale and high calcium shorten life.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to replace all four cartridges at once?

For multi-cartridge filters like the Pentair Clean & Clear Plus, yes: replace the set together so flow and pressure stay even.
