How often should you change a cartridge?

  • Replace most pool and spa cartridges about every 12 to 24 months, sooner with heavy use, torn pleats, flattened or cracked end caps, or if pressure stays high after a clean.
  • Clean when the pressure gauge reads 8 to 10 psi above its clean reading, typically every few weeks in season; spa cartridges need a rinse every week or two and a soak about monthly.
  • Small Intex-style cartridges are cheap and wear fast; many owners swap them every couple of weeks in summer.
